How to Eat Gluten-Free and Still Stick to Your Budget

Everyone knows breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should be healthy and nutritional. Celiac sufferers are at no disadvantage when it comes to finding healthy breakfasts as there are now a huge variety of alternatives to normal toast and wheat-based cereal. Lots of supermarkets and specialist stores now supply gluten-free oatmeal, ideal for making delicious porridge. This is great for keeping you on-the-go all day as it releases energy slowly and small portions can fill you up quickly.


Another tasty favourite amongst celiac sufferers is plain yoghurt mixed with some berries or a fruit salad, a great protein-filled way to start your day.

When it comes to gluten-free snacks, these can often be quite expensive in the shops. Home-made snacks are the best solution if you are trying to stick to a budget. Portions of fruit and veg are generally suitable for celiac sufferers and won’t cost you a packet. This can be carrot or celery sticks or dried fruit snacks such as raisins or apricots mixed with natural yoghurt.

Kids are a bit more difficult to please when it comes to snacks, as fruit and vegetables are often the last thing they want to snack on. Large packs of corn-based snack puffs cost very little in most supermarkets and will keep their hunger at bay until dinner time.

Even though following a gluten-free diet means you have to give up many pastas and cereals, this doesn’t mean every meal time has to consist of plain and boring meat and veg. Omelettes are a great low-cost meal for celiac sufferers as eggs are naturally gluten-free. These can be made into a great hearty and filling meal, for example with vegetables like peppers, peas and spring onions.


Gone are the days of having to pay excessive amounts of money for gluten-free food only found in specialist stores. The variety of products now available in supermarkets means sufferers can now find the food they want on their doorstep and what’s more, for reasonable prices. This also includes gluten-free drinks which were once relatively hard to come by. The increased number of sufferers and awareness of the condition over the years means the varieties of suitable food are now in abundance.

Remember when it comes to []gluten-free food, the trick is to be imaginative with your recipes. Try out new ideas and experiment with combining different foods and flavours.
